Florence’s Big Man’s Barbecue Steps Up to Feed Families Affected by Government Shutdown

FLORENCE, AL — When times get tough, the Shoals community has a way of coming together, and this time, one of Florence’s favorite pitmasters is leading the charge.

Shun Cunningham, better known as “The Big Man” of Big Man’s Barbecue, has announced that his restaurant will be giving away free family meals now through November 15, 2025, to help local families impacted by the ongoing government shutdown.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Big Man said:

“Right now we got a government shutdown going on, and there’s a lot of people here in this area that work for the government that are impacted. The least we could do… starting now until November 15th, we’re gonna give away eight free family pack meals to any family or individual that’s been impacted.”

To receive a meal, affected individuals simply need to provide proof of government employment and contact the restaurant privately through Facebook Messenger or by phone. Big Man emphasized that all requests will be handled with discretion and respect.

“It’ll be private. No one will know. Just tell us your situation and we’ll take care of you and your family for the night,” he said. “If it’s just you, we’ll take care of you too. That’s the least we can do to pay it back and help during these hard times.”

A Local Business Giving Back

Known for its smoky ribs, pulled pork, and friendly southern hospitality, Big Man’s Barbecue has long been a local favorite in Florence. But this latest act of generosity shows that Big Man’s heart for the community runs even deeper than his signature style of Alabama BBQ.

The restaurant’s initiative isn’t just a free meal, it’s a reminder that the Shoals stands together when it matters most.

“We appreciate all the support from the community and the surrounding area,” Big Man said. “Have a blessed day.”
